Fixing AC-3 Audio Issues in Windows 11 24H2: A Quick Guide

If you’ve recently upgraded your PC to Windows 11 24H2 and noticed some media files have no audio, the issue might be the missing AC-3 codec. Also known as Dolby Digital, this codec is crucial for playing multi-channel surround sound audio.

I personaly faced the problem when I tried to run Plex Desktop on a newly installed Windows 11 24H2 installation. Some of my media files had no audio.

Why the AC-3 Codec is Missing

The AC-3 codec, also known as Dolby Digital, was previously included in Windows. However, starting with Windows 11 24H2, Microsoft has removed it from new installations. That said, there are exceptions:

  • Upgraded Systems: If you upgraded from an earlier version of Windows, the codec will remain available.
  • Pre-installed Codecs: Some manufacturers include the codec with their devices, ensuring AC-3 encoded media plays correctly.

If your system doesn’t fall under these categories, you’ll need to manually add the codec to restore audio functionality.

How to Fix the Problem

  1. Download the Codecs:
